FOIA REQUESTS POLICY
-
To request public records from LifeWays, you may:
Email: Send your written request to Ashton Dixon at ashton.dixon@lifewaysmi.org.
Submit a form: Complete and submit a FOIA Request Form (optional).
Using the form is optional. You may submit a written request by email without using the form.
Important: If you submit a request by email, the subject line must clearly state “FOIA Request".
Please describe the records you are seeking as clearly as possible. Include relevant details, such as dates, subjects, record types, or departments, to help LifeWays identify the requested records.
-
After reviewing your request, LifeWays will provide a written response explaining how your request will be handled.
Depending on the circumstances, a response may:
Grant your request: The requested records will be provided, subject to any applicable fees.
Grant your request in part: Some records will be provided, while other records may be withheld or redacted as permitted or required by law.
Deny your request: LifeWays will explain the basis for the denial.
Provide a fee estimate: If fees apply, the response will explain the estimated cost and any required deposit before the request proceeds.
Read the response carefully for information about access to records, any applicable fees or deposits, the reasons for a denial or partial denial, and your options for appeal.
-
Some FOIA requests may involve fees for locating, reviewing, separating, duplicating, or delivering records. The cost depends on the nature and complexity of the request and the work required to fulfill it.
If a request has fees associated with it, LifeWays requires a deposit of 50% of the estimated fee before processing the request, as permitted by law. The written response will explain the applicable deposit and estimated costs.
LifeWays calculates fees in accordance with the Michigan FOIA and its written FOIA Requests Policy. Fee estimates and charges are based on allowable costs associated with fulfilling the request. The estimate and final charge may differ depending on the actual work required.
For more information, please review LifeWays’ FOIA Requests Policy, which explain the fee components and how charges are calculated.
-
If you disagree with a denial, a partial denial, or a fee assessment, you may have options to challenge the decision.
You may submit an administrative appeal by:
Email: Send your appeal to Ashton Dixon at ashton.dixon@lifewaysmi.org.
Submit a form: Complete and submit LifeWays’ FOIA Appeal Form. (optional)
Using the form is optional. You may submit a written appeal by email without using the form.
Important: If you submit an appeal by email, the subject line must clearly state “FOIA Appeal".
An administrative appeal should clearly explain the decision or fee you are challenging and why you believe it should be reconsidered. Include relevant details and identify the original FOIA request, if applicable.
You may also seek judicial review of a FOIA denial or fee dispute through the appropriate Michigan circuit court, as provided by law.
