LifeWays Crisis Residential Unit Earns Two-Year License Renewal After Successful State Audit
Jackson, MI
LifeWays’ Crisis Residential Unit (CRU), a short-term residential program that provides a safe, supportive alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, has successfully completed its state licensing audit, securing its license for another two years.
The CRU serves individuals experiencing a mental health crisis who need more support than outpatient care but do not require inpatient hospitalization. The program offers 24/7 staffing, medication management, peer support, and a structured, home-like environment designed to help guests stabilize and return safely to their communities.
The state audit, conducted on February 5, included a comprehensive review of clinical charts, medication administration, safety protocols, employee files, and an on-site inspection of the unit. The CRU passed with only two minor findings and no charting, medication, or facility infractions.
“This outcome reflects the day-to-day work of our team,” said Tricia Bortell, CRU Program Administrator. “We had no charting errors, no medication errors, and no infractions related to the unit itself. That speaks to the attentiveness of our staff and their commitment to the people we serve.”
Preparation for the audit included gathering required documentation—such as fire safety drills, medication records, staff training records, job descriptions, and employee files—while continuing the team’s day-to-day focus on maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
“Most of all, I’m proud that my team simply does what they do every day—making sure our guests are safe and cared for,” Bortell added. “When they have downtime, they’re cleaning, checking the unit, and making sure it remains a safe, welcoming space.”
LifeWays’ CRU is one of several crisis services offered by the organization, which works to ensure individuals can access timely, community-based mental health support without unnecessary hospitalization.
“We want our community and partners to know that we’re here to help with mental health needs without necessarily going to the hospital,” Bortell said. “We have a competent, caring, and compassionate team—from direct care staff and peers to our CRU psychiatrist, Dr. Alavi. We’re here when you need us.”
